First Steps After Water Damage

May 26, 2025

Water damage can strike unexpectedly, whether from a burst pipe, a leaky roof, or a severe storm. When it happens, knowing what to do in the first few hours can make a major difference in how quickly your property recovers. At CMS Restoration, we understand the urgency of the situation. Here’s a straightforward the first steps after water damage occurs.

1. Prioritize Safety

Before anything else, check for safety hazards. Turn off electricity if water is near outlets or appliances, and avoid walking through standing water. If there’s structural damage, vacate the premises until it’s declared safe.

2. Stop the Source

If you can identify and safely stop the water source, do so. This might involve shutting off your main water valve or covering a damaged section of the roof with a tarp.

3. Document the Damage

Take clear photos and videos of affected areas and belongings. This documentation will be important when you file an insurance claim.

4. Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible. They will guide you through the claims process and let you know what’s covered under your policy.

5. Call a Water Damage Restoration Professional

Acting quickly limits long-term damage. CMS Restoration offers 24/7 emergency service to help with water removal, drying, and repairs. The sooner restoration begins, the better your outcome will be.

6. Remove Personal Items

If safe to do so, remove valuable items, furniture, and important documents from the affected area. This can help protect them from further damage.

7. Start Drying the Area

While you wait for professional help, open windows and use fans to begin the drying process. This can slow down the spread of moisture and help prevent mold growth.
